The secret to an excellent flashmob lies in the talent

Flashmobs are one of Verb’s guilty marketing activation pleasures. Bold, loud, entertaining – what’s not to love? If you’re looking to give your brand a quick and effective marketing boost a this might just be your ticket – it worked for Coca-Cola’s summer Coke Emoji campaign.

Just as the world was jumping on the emoji bandwagon Coca-Cola approached us to help them boost their Coke Emoji campaign. A flashmob using life-sized emojis was the obvious route to take.

PRODUCTION MATTERS MOST

The bespoke production of 30 life-size emoji heads was not going to be a quick or easy task – especially because the festive season was a week away from starting. We focused our efforts on finding a manufacturer with the capacity to turn this around in 2 weeks.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Finding the right locations to execute our vision was crucial. A flashmob is after all meaningless if there are no people around to see it. We dipped into out high traffic shopping mall contacts, stadium contacts, beach contacts, transport hub contacts and traffic contacts to make sure our client gets the most bang for their buck!

DANCING REQUIRES DANCERS

We’ve done our fair share of flashmobs over the years and the one thing we can confidently say is that if there is any dancing required hire actual dancers. Unlike our Flying Fish Munday activation, this one had a dance component that would fall flat if we hired any old promoter.

The Verb Entertainment team ensured we got the best dancers in every region helping us make Coke Emoji magic. They also handled the choreography to give us one of the most toe-tapping, fist-bumping activations of the summer!

LOGISTICS

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – if your logistics game isn’t strong you’ll never pull off a nationwide activation. Transporting 30 emoji heads the size of car tires needs a solid plan or you’re going to burn through your budget. Over three weeks we managed to save 50% on transportation costs because our planning ensured timeous collections and deliveries to our three major cities – Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.
